Purpose
Charging and storing large lithium batteries brings a very small but real risk of fire. This policy sets out conditions for e-bike and other personal mobility devices in the lodge to minimise the risks. The policy is based on advice from the Insurance Council of Australia and a prominent insurer.
Although not so much a fire risk, it is inappropriate to charge larger electronic vehicles using the club's electricity.
Policy
- Batteries must only be charged in the designated area in the ski/bike room, on the hard floor.
- Only use reputable brands from a "bricks and mortar" or other reliable supplier with an Australian warranty and support.
- Ensure there is sufficient air flow around lithium-ion batteries when charging.
- Store batteries and lithium-ion products in cool, dry places and out of direct sunlight, including while charging.
- Avoid using batteries, products or chargers that are damaged, overheating or showing signs of failure such as swelling, leaking or venting gas.
- Check the charger being used is suitable for the product being charged.
- Do not leave devices charging for longer than they need to, overnight or if you are away from the lodge. Unplug when full charge is reached.
- Never leave batteries at the lodge after your stay. If they need to be disposed of, take them to your local recycling centre.
- In the event of a fire, contact 000 immediately.
- Under no circumstances are larger electronic vehicles to be charged at the club.
