Purpose

Charging and storing large lithium batteries brings a very small but real risk of fire. This policy sets out conditions for e-bike and other personal mobility devices in the lodge to minimise the risks. The policy is based on advice from the Insurance Council of Australia and a prominent insurer.

Although not so much a fire risk, it is inappropriate to charge larger electronic vehicles using the club's electricity.

Policy

  1. Batteries must only be charged in the designated area in the ski/bike room, on the hard floor.
  2. Only use reputable brands from a "bricks and mortar" or other reliable supplier with an Australian warranty and support.
  3. Ensure there is sufficient air flow around lithium-ion batteries when charging.
  4. Store batteries and lithium-ion products in cool, dry places and out of direct sunlight, including while charging.
  5. Avoid using batteries, products or chargers that are damaged, overheating or showing signs of failure such as swelling, leaking or venting gas.
  6. Check the charger being used is suitable for the product being charged.
  7. Do not leave devices charging for longer than they need to, overnight or if you are away from the lodge. Unplug when full charge is reached.
  8. Never leave batteries at the lodge after your stay. If they need to be disposed of, take them to your local recycling centre.
  9. In the event of a fire, contact 000 immediately.
  10. Under no circumstances are larger electronic vehicles to be charged at the club.
